Yobe Police Uncover Decomposing Body in Shallow Grave, Launch Murder Investigation
The Yobe State Police Command has initiated a comprehensive investigation into a suspected murder case after the discovery of an unidentified decomposing body buried in a shallow grave in Damaturu. The grim finding was reported on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at Madinatu Alimarami Extension Ward, prompting immediate police action.
Discovery and Initial Response
According to SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Yobe State Command, the incident came to light following a report received at approximately 0900 hours on March 21. Police operatives from the ‘A’ Divisional Police Headquarters in Damaturu responded swiftly, arriving at the scene around 1410 hours to uncover the shallow grave.
The body, which was in an advanced state of decomposition, had both legs exposed, indicating a hasty burial. Medical personnel from General Hospital, Damaturu, collaborated with the police during the initial examination of the scene.
Preliminary Findings and Suspicion of Foul Play
SP Abdulkarim stated that a preliminary examination of the corpse revealed no visible signs of struggle or external physical injury. However, the police strongly suspect foul play due to the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
Key evidence at the scene included tyre marks believed to be from a vehicle, suggesting that the corpse might have been transported and dumped at the location before being buried. This detail has heightened suspicions of a deliberate act, leading the command to classify the case as a suspected culpable homicide.
Investigation and Public Appeal
The Yobe State Police Command has condemned what it describes as a heinous act and has commenced a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the incident. The primary objectives are to identify the deceased, trace the perpetrators, and bring them to justice.
In a statement released on Sunday, March 22, SP Abdulkarim urged members of the public to assist in the investigation. He specifically called on individuals with reports of missing persons in Damaturu and its environs to visit the ‘A’ Division or any nearest police station for possible identification.
Additionally, the public is encouraged to provide any credible information that could aid the ongoing probe and lead to the arrest of those responsible. The command has assured residents of its commitment to ensuring safety and security, vowing to spare no effort in resolving the case.
Disposition of the Body
Following the examination, the body has been released to the community for proper burial, in accordance with local customs and practices. This step was taken despite the ongoing investigation, as the identity of the deceased remains unknown at this time.
The Yobe State Police Command continues to work diligently on the case, with updates expected as the investigation progresses. The discovery has raised concerns in the area, highlighting the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
