A violent confrontation between two groups of youths over a divorced woman has resulted in the death of a 27-year-old man in Damaturu, Yobe State. The incident occurred on June 29, 2026, at Kalam Hamlet, Damaturu, according to the Yobe State Police Command.
Details of the Incident
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the incident in a statement released on June 30, 2026. He said that at about 0300 hours, operatives of the 'A' Division, Damaturu, responded to a distress call regarding a violent clash. Preliminary investigation revealed that the conflict began when Abubakar Hassan, 30, had a misunderstanding with Buba Usman, 23, over a divorced woman.
During the confrontation, Abubakar Hassan called his three brothers—Ibrahim Hassan, 27; Isa Hassan, 20; and Aliyu Hassan, 30—to the scene. Upon their arrival, Buba Usman allegedly attacked Ibrahim Hassan with an axe, inflicting a deep cut on his neck, which resulted in his immediate death. He also injured Abubakar Hassan, Isa Hassan, and Aliyu Hassan with the same weapon.
Retaliation and Police Response
In retaliation, relatives of the deceased allegedly attacked Buba Usman with arrows, causing injuries to his abdomen. The police statement read: “During the ensuing confrontation, relatives of the deceased allegedly attacked Buba Usman with arrows, causing injuries to his abdomen.”
Police operatives visited the scene, evacuated the injured persons to the Teaching Hospital, Damaturu, for medical treatment, while the corpse of the deceased was deposited at the hospital morgue and later released to the family. The principal suspect, Buba Usman, is currently receiving treatment at the same hospital and has confessed to the crime. Investigation is ongoing.
