Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has strongly condemned the conduct of some youths who reportedly displayed their undergarments during the recent official visit of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. The governor described the act as disgraceful and contrary to the state's cherished values and traditions.
Governor Distances Administration from Incident
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Governor Yusuf said he had distanced himself, his administration, and the entire people of Kano from the incident. He insisted that such behaviour does not reflect the culture and traditions of Kano State, which are rooted in respect and decency.
The governor made the remarks during the Third Special Prayer for Lasting Peace held at the Government House, Kano. The event gathered 4,444 Qur'anic reciters who prayed for peace, stability, and prosperity in Kano and Nigeria as a whole.
Incident Contradicts Kano First Agenda
Governor Yusuf described the incident as a disturbing departure from the principles of his administration's Kano First Agenda. He reiterated his commitment to upholding the state's moral and cultural standards, and called on parents and community leaders to guide the youth properly.
Assembly Confirms New Deputy Governor
Meanwhile, the Kano State House of Assembly has confirmed the nomination of Murtala Sule Garo as the new Deputy Governor. Garo, a former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, was cleared after successfully passing the screening process and security checks conducted by the House Committee, headed by the Deputy Speaker.
The confirmation was approved during plenary yesterday. Presenting the committee's report, Deputy Speaker Muhammad Bello stated that Garo's nomination followed the resignation of the former Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.
Constitutional Basis for Appointment
Bello explained that the screening exercise was conducted in line with Section 191(3)(c) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the Assembly to approve a nominee in the event of a vacancy. Garo, aged 48, is described as a seasoned political administrator with over two decades of service in both elective and appointive positions.
The confirmation of Garo is expected to strengthen the state's executive arm as it continues to pursue developmental goals under Governor Yusuf's leadership.
