Kano's Singa Market Gutted by Fire, Traders Count Losses

Early Morning Inferno Ravages Popular Kano Market

A devastating fire outbreak has gutted sections of the popular Singa Market along Bello Road in Kano State, leaving traders counting colossal losses and struggling to salvage what remains of their merchandise. The inferno, which started in the early hours of Monday, swept through the market with alarming speed, consuming lock-up shops and goods worth millions of Naira before firefighters managed to contain the blaze.

Chaotic Scenes as Traders Watch Life's Work Go Up in Flames

Eyewitnesses described scenes of utter chaos and panic as the fire rapidly spread through the market. Traders and residents watched in despair as flames consumed their shops and merchandise, with many unable to save even a single item from the fast-moving inferno. The incident triggered major commotion as victims scrambled to salvage belongings while firefighters battled the intense flames.

Alhaji Sani Usman, a dealer at the market, recounted the tragic loss his family suffered. "My brother has lost everything in one of his shops. The entire stock is gone. This was sudden, and we didn't know the cause. It is a tragic situation, especially with this current economic situation," he stated emotionally.

Another retailer, Alhaji Muhammad Bello, lamented the speed of the fire's spread. "The fire moved too fast. I truly wanted to help, but I couldn't, and it was simply because the fire was moving too fast. Actually, before we realised what was happening, many rows of shops, as you can see, were already engulfed. I have lost some goods too in one of the shops," he explained.

Emergency Response and Firefighting Efforts

Officials from the Kano State Fire Service arrived promptly at the scene to combat the blaze, with their intervention preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent markets. According to Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the service spokesperson, firefighters had been battling the blaze since approximately 3:16 am.

"The fire is currently battling the blaze at Singa Market. Since about 03:16 am to now. The house that caught fire is known as the MAZAB House. However, our crews have so far managed to bring the fire under control," Abdullahi stated.

Despite the fire service's efforts, the affected section of the market suffered extensive damage. The service has not yet released an official statement regarding the cause of the fire or the total extent of the damage, leaving traders and residents anxiously awaiting answers.

Eyewitness Accounts of Panic and Destruction

An eyewitness, Yahuza Umar, described the terrifying scene as the fire took hold. "If you were there when it happened, you'd run for your life. People were shouting and running in different directions. The panic was too much. Just look at how people's life's work is in ashes," he recounted, highlighting the emotional toll on the market community.

The fire has raised serious concerns about market safety infrastructure and emergency preparedness in commercial areas. Traders now face the daunting task of rebuilding their businesses amid Nigeria's challenging economic climate, with many having lost their entire livelihoods in the blaze.

Related Fire Incident in Kano

In a related development, a separate fire recently gutted sections of Rogo General Hospital in Kano State, forcing patients, staff, and visitors to evacuate as flames and smoke spread rapidly. That incident saw community members and fire services working together to rescue patients, including the elderly and immobile, while medical equipment, medicines, and hospital records were destroyed.

The consecutive fire outbreaks in Kano have raised questions about safety measures and fire prevention infrastructure in both commercial and public facilities across the state. Authorities continue to investigate the causes of both incidents as affected communities grapple with the aftermath of these devastating events.
