Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called for calm from residents following a significant fire outbreak at a high-rise building in the heart of Lagos Island. The incident, which occurred at the 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) Building located on Martins Street, did not result in any loss of life, according to official statements.
Swift Emergency Response Activated
The Lagos State Government sprang into action after receiving a distress call at 4:41 pm on Wednesday. Fire crews from the Ebute Elefun and Dolphin stations were immediately dispatched to the scene. They received crucial backup from the Sari Iganmu Fire Station and the Alausa headquarters of the fire service.
Demonstrating commendable efficiency, the first responders arrived at the location within 12 minutes, by 4:53 pm, and began coordinated efforts to contain the blaze. Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was personally monitoring the situation, directed the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service to intensify their response and ensure the evacuation of nearby buildings to safeguard the public.
Governor's All-Night Vigil and Safety Directive
Through a statement released on Thursday by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, it was revealed that Governor Sanwo-Olu remained in constant communication with emergency and security agencies well into the early hours of the morning. As of 3:40 am, when the flames had largely been subdued, he was still receiving updates and issuing directives.
The governor placed the highest priority on human safety. He specifically instructed that no individual should be left inside the building, stressing that the protection of life far outweighs that of property. "Our priority is the safety of lives," Governor Sanwo-Olu stated. "I have directed that the building and its surroundings be thoroughly secured and that emergency personnel must ensure that no one is left inside."
Cause Unknown, Situation Under Control
While the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, preliminary reports indicate it originated on the fifth floor of the structure before spreading to other levels. The affected building, which previously served as corporate office space, is currently used primarily as a warehouse and retail outlet for clothing materials.
Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the courage and swift action of the firefighters and first responders. He urged Lagosians to remain calm, affirming that the situation is under control. Security agencies have cordoned off the area, and first responders are conducting ongoing safety assessments to prevent any secondary incidents.
