A serious collision between a train and a commercial bus occurred in Lagos State on Monday night, but fortunately resulted in no loss of life or injuries.
Emergency Response Activated After Distress Call
The incident took place at Arena, Oshodi, on Monday, December 22, 2025. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) received a distress alert via its toll-free lines at 7:53 PM. The agency immediately activated the state's emergency response plan from its Cappa Base in Oshodi.
According to a preliminary report issued by the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, and dated December 23, 2025, the agency's response team arrived at the scene by 8:11 PM.
Details of the Collision and Cause
Upon arrival, officials found that a train had collided with a white Toyota Hiace bus with registration number AGL-671-XR. The bus was stuck on the railway tracks following the impact.
LASEMA's preliminary investigation pinpointed reckless driving by the bus driver as the immediate cause of the accident. The agency stated that the driver was maneuvering outside the Arena shopping complex in Oshodi when the bus was hit by an oncoming train.
Despite the severity of the crash, which caused significant damage to the bus, no casualty or fatality was recorded.
Recovery Operation and Restoration of Service
The LASEMA team conducted a risk assessment and implemented safety controls to prevent any secondary incidents. A critical step was informing the railway station to halt all train operations temporarily to allow for a safe recovery process.
The damaged bus was successfully extracted from the railway tracks. It was subsequently towed to the yard of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in Oshodi.
The rail track was cleared and normal train activities have been fully restored, marking the conclusion of a successful recovery operation by the emergency responders.
