The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has released a comprehensive report detailing a total of 246 fire incidents recorded across the state in the year 2025. This alarming figure underscores an urgent need for enhanced public safety awareness and significant improvements in emergency response infrastructure to mitigate future risks.

Dr. Maroof Akinwande, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service and Special Adviser on Fire Reform to Governor Seyi Makinde, disclosed these statistics during an exclusive interview conducted in Ibadan. He provided an in-depth analysis of the agency's operational activities throughout the year, highlighting both the formidable challenges faced and the notable progress achieved in fire management and prevention efforts.
Rescue Operations and False Alarm Challenges
According to Dr. Akinwande, firefighters successfully rescued 42 individuals from various emergency situations over the course of the year. Tragically, 30 bodies were recovered from fire scenes, reflecting the severe human cost of these incidents. Additionally, the agency received 10 false emergency calls from residents, a situation described as both distracting and potentially dangerous, as it diverts critical resources away from genuine life-threatening emergencies.
Monthly Incident Analysis and Property Damage Assessment
A month-by-month breakdown of the fire incidents reveals that January recorded the highest number with 29 cases, closely followed by February with 27 and March with 22. April and May each saw 24 incidents, while June experienced a slight decrease with 17 cases. In the second half of the year, July recorded 15 incidents, August 14, September 24, and both October and November reported 13 each, with December concluding the year with 21 incidents.
In terms of property damage, Dr. Akinwande disclosed that 116 residential buildings were affected by fire outbreaks in 2025, while 38 commercial shops were completely razed. The destruction extended to 14 vehicles and 21 petroleum tankers, incidents that posed serious risks to both human lives and the surrounding environment due to potential explosions and pollution.
Overall Operations and Government Initiatives
Overall, the Oyo State Fire Service attended to 353 operations during the year, which included 95 special services beyond conventional fire outbreaks. According to him, Governor Seyi Makinde has approved the procurement of seven brand new firefighting trucks, expected to be delivered within the next three to six months. Furthermore, the government has ensured the payment of firefighting auxiliaries and approved the purchase of new tyres and batteries to improve the operational efficiency of existing vehicles.
