A three-storey student hostel collapsed in Amaokpala, Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra state on Sunday night, July 26, leaving an unknown number of students feared trapped beneath the debris. Emergency responders, including police, fire service, and state emergency management agency personnel, launched rescue operations immediately after a distress call was received.
Police Confirm Incident, Rescue Underway
Anambra State Police Command spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident, stating that security agencies swiftly secured the area and coordinated rescue efforts. “On receipt of the distress report, the Police… immediately mobilised to the scene, secured the area to prevent further danger, and coordinated rescue efforts,” Mr Ikenga said. He added that officials from the Anambra State Fire Service and the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) also joined the operation.
Victims Rescued, Search Continues
Some injured victims have been pulled from the debris and taken to a hospital in Oko for treatment. Rescue teams continue searching the site for anyone who may remain trapped. Authorities have yet to announce the number of people rescued, injured, or killed. The building, identified as Elite Five Star Lodge, is primarily occupied by students of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko.
Cause of Collapse Yet Unknown
The cause of the building collapse has not been established. The police urged residents to avoid spreading unverified information and to stay away from the scene to allow emergency workers to carry out rescue efforts without obstruction. This incident adds to a concerning pattern of building collapses in Nigeria, where enforcement of construction standards remains a challenge.

In a similar event earlier this month, a three-storey commercial building collapsed at Alakija Bus Stop in Lagos’ Amuwo-Odofin area, leaving several people feared trapped. Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy Gbenga Omotoso reported that six people were rescued from that rubble, while search efforts continued for others. These recurring tragedies underscore the urgent need for stricter building regulations and oversight.
