UAE Residency: Age Rules for Sponsoring Children Explained
UAE Residency: Age Rules for Sponsoring Children Explained

The UAE government has published clear rules for foreign residents with a residence permit who wish to sponsor their children. Unmarried daughters can be sponsored at any age, while sons can only be sponsored until age 18 under standard arrangements. A specific exception applies to sons who are actively studying within the UAE.

Official Rules on Sponsoring Sons and Daughters

According to official information published online by the UAE government, a foreigner holding a residence permit may sponsor unmarried daughters regardless of their age. For sons, however, the standard sponsorship arrangement applies only until they reach 18 years old.

These conditions were reported by Legit.ng on 23 August 2026, citing official UAE government sources. The rules are part of the broader framework the UAE uses to regulate family residency for expatriate residents.

Exception for Sons in Full-Time Education

One notable provision applies to male dependants who turn 18 while still studying. If a son is enrolled in a recognised educational institution within the UAE after reaching adulthood, his father can continue to sponsor him, provided proof of enrolment is submitted to the relevant authorities.

This means the sponsorship is not automatically terminated at 18 for sons who remain in school or university in the country. The UAE government said: "An expatriate resident can sponsor unmarried daughters up to any age and sons up to 18 years. If a son is studying in the UAE after the age of 18, the father can continue to sponsor him if evidence of their studies in the UAE is supplied."

Impact on Expatriate Families

The rules reflect the broader framework the UAE uses to regulate family residency, ensuring that sponsorship arrangements are tied to specific circumstances rather than left open-ended. For expatriate families, understanding these conditions is essential to maintaining their children's legal residency status.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the UAE government published the full conditions foreigners must meet to obtain a retirement residence permit in the country. Applicants must be at least 55 years old or have worked for a minimum of 15 years before retirement to be eligible for this residency permit.
