FCT Police Uncover Child Trafficking Syndicate Disguised as Orphanage, Rescue 21 Children
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has made a significant breakthrough in combating child trafficking, uncovering a sophisticated syndicate that operated under the deceptive cover of an orphanage home in the Saburi area of Abuja. This alarming discovery has shed light on a criminal enterprise that preyed upon vulnerable families across Nigeria.
Community Petition Leads to Investigation
According to Police Spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh, the operation came to light following a formal petition submitted by concerned members of the Saburi community on January 29, 2026. The petition, addressed to the Office of the Commissioner of Police for the FCT Command, raised serious concerns about suspicious activities associated with the orphanage facility.
"Acting swiftly on the complaint, the Command commenced a discreet and thorough investigation into the matter," stated Adeh in an official release. The police response demonstrated their commitment to addressing community concerns and protecting vulnerable citizens.
Deceptive Tactics Targeting Vulnerable Families
Preliminary investigations revealed a disturbing pattern of exploitation. The syndicate operators specifically targeted indigent families in rural communities throughout Nigeria, using persuasive tactics to gain custody of young children.
The criminals allegedly promised families that they would provide their children with:
- Access to quality education in urban centers
- Improved living conditions and opportunities
- A better future through sponsorship programs
Instead of fulfilling these promises, the children were reportedly trafficked through the orphanage facility to prospective buyers in various parts of the country, turning vulnerable minors into commodities for illegal trade.
Rescue Operation and Ongoing Efforts
The police operation has yielded significant results, with 21 out of 46 children allegedly trafficked through the illegal orphanage operation successfully rescued. These children are currently undergoing procedures to ensure their safe reunification with their biological parents.
"Efforts continue to locate the remaining victims and apprehend all those connected to the crime," emphasized Adeh, indicating that the investigation remains active and comprehensive.
The police are working diligently to:
- Identify and rescue all remaining children connected to the syndicate
- Apprehend every individual involved in the criminal operation
- Gather evidence for successful prosecution of the perpetrators
Public Warning and Preventive Measures
SP Josephine Adeh issued a crucial warning to parents and guardians across Nigeria, urging them to exercise extreme vigilance regarding their children's welfare. She emphasized that not all offers of sponsorship or improved opportunities are genuine, and families should thoroughly verify any organization or individual making such promises.
The FCT Police Command's successful operation highlights the importance of community-police collaboration in combating serious crimes. The Saburi community's decision to report their suspicions played a vital role in uncovering this trafficking network and rescuing vulnerable children from exploitation.
