Gunmen Abduct 14 Travellers in Benue, Kill One in Brazen Road Attack
In a distressing security incident, at least 14 travellers have been abducted by gunmen along the Utonkon–Okpoga Road in Benue State. The attack targeted a commercial bus carrying passengers from Oju and Obi Local Government Areas who were en route to the western part of the country.
Details of the Abduction Incident
The abduction occurred around 7pm on Monday, February 9, along the road linking Ado and Okpokwu Local Government Area. According to an eyewitness, Comrade Jude Onwe, a youth leader in the Utonkon community, the bus was transporting 16 Igede-speaking passengers heading towards Okpoga in Okpokwu LGA.
Onwe explained that the passengers had departed from Iheijwo Market in Oju LGA for various destinations in western Nigeria. They were intercepted by the gunmen after passing through the Utonkon–Ojapo/Okpoga axis in Ado LGA.
Violent Confrontation and Aftermath
The attackers stopped the vehicle and forcefully took 15 passengers into the bush. Tragically, one person was shot dead when the driver initially refused to stop the bus. The gunmen confiscated the passengers' phones to prevent them from contacting their relatives.
The abandoned bus was later recovered and moved to the Utonkon Police Station for further investigation and evidence collection.
Police Confirmation and Response
The Benue State Police Command has officially confirmed the abduction of 14 passengers travelling from the Igede axis of Oju and Obi Local Government Areas. Police spokesperson DSP Udeme Edet stated, "Concerning the abduction of passengers on the Okpokwu road, it is true that it happened. Investigation into the incident is ongoing, and we are on top of the situation."
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region and raises concerns about road safety for travellers in Benue State.
