The Anglican community in Kaduna State is mourning the tragic death of Venerable Edwin Achi, who died while held captive by kidnappers exactly one month after his abduction.
Month-Long Captivity Ends in Tragedy
The Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church in Ungwan Maijero was kidnapped alongside his wife and daughter on October 28, 2025. The family had recently relocated to Nissi community in Chikun local government area when bandits stormed their home and took them hostage.
The Anglican Diocese of Kaduna officially announced the priest's death on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, describing the incident as devastating for the entire religious community. Church authorities confirmed that while Venerable Achi had died in captivity, his wife and daughter remain held by the kidnappers.
Church Mourns Faithful Servant
In an emotional statement, the diocese characterized Achi's death as a painful loss to the entire diocese, the clergy, and all who knew his faithful ministry. The church highlighted his humble spirit and unwavering devotion to serving God throughout his religious career.
In honor of the late priest, the diocese has cancelled its scheduled Stand Up for Jesus 2025 event. Church officials emphasized their continued prayers for the safe release of Achi's wife and daughter, who remain in dangerous captivity.
Family's Desperate Plea and Ransom Demand
The kidnapping took a disturbing turn when the bandits contacted the family to demand an enormous N600 million ransom for the safe release of all three captives. The situation gained additional attention when a family member raised alarm on social media, revealing that the kidnappers had used his phone to post pictures of the captured couple on Facebook.
The family member made a desperate appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging federal intervention similar to recent successful rescue operations involving 24 Kebbi schoolgirls and 38 Kwara CAC members.
Venerable Edwin Achi originally hailed from Umuaja in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State, though he had been serving the Kaduna Anglican community at the time of his abduction. The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges facing religious leaders and communities across northern Nigeria.
