Amotekun Rescues Father and Son from Kidnappers in Ondo State
The Ondo State Security Network Agency, widely known as Amotekun, has successfully rescued a man, Segun Makinde, and his 15-year-old son from kidnappers in a dramatic late-night operation. The incident occurred along Oda Road in the Akure South Local Government area, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in the region.
Details of the Kidnapping and Rescue Operation
According to the Corps Commander, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, the victims were abducted at Pelebe, on the outskirts of Akure, between 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on March 27, 2026. Makinde recounted that he was attacked shortly after arriving home in the evening, where armed men ambushed him at his residence. They shot at his vehicle, assaulted him with cutlasses, and forcibly dragged him and his son into the bush.
The kidnappers, initially numbering about five, later joined forces with additional armed men as they moved deeper into the forest. Makinde described how they were marched through the bush for hours, beaten, and threatened with death if they resisted. However, an opportunity for escape arose when they heard voices nearby, which turned out to be Amotekun operatives who had positioned themselves in the area.
Fierce Gun Battle and Successful Rescue
As Makinde and his son attempted to flee, the kidnappers opened fire, prompting an immediate response from the Amotekun Rapid Response Squad. A fierce gun battle ensued around 1:00 a.m., forcing the kidnappers to abandon the victims and flee. In the confusion, Makinde and his son escaped further into the bush, hiding for several minutes before the operatives located and rescued them.
Upon rescue, the security personnel provided immediate medical attention to the victims, treating their injuries and ensuring their safety. They were then transported to the Amotekun headquarters in Alagbaka, Akure. Makinde expressed gratitude for the swift response, stating, "They treated our injuries and ensured we were safe. I am grateful for their swift response."
Implications for Security in Ondo State
This rescue operation underscores the critical role of Amotekun in combating kidnapping and other security threats in Ondo State. The agency's rapid deployment and engagement with criminals demonstrate a proactive approach to public safety. However, the incident also raises concerns about the persistence of such crimes in the area, necessitating continued vigilance and community cooperation.
Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activities to security agencies. The successful rescue serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by kidnappers and the importance of robust security measures to protect citizens.
