Bandits Storm Church in Kwara, Abduct Eight Worshippers During Sunday Service
Suspected bandits launched a brazen attack on the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA) Church Omugo in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State on Sunday, abducting eight worshippers during a religious service. The assailants arrived at the church premises while the congregation was gathered, firing shots sporadically to instill fear and chaos among the attendees, who scrambled for safety in the ensuing panic.
Three Victims Escape, Five Remain in Captivity
In a development that brought a glimmer of hope amidst the crisis, three of the abducted individuals managed to escape from their captors shortly after the incident. However, five worshippers remain in the custody of the bandits, with ongoing rescue operations focused on securing their safe return. The Kwara State government has confirmed the attack and the subsequent escape, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Government Condemns Attack and Commends Security Response
Bolanle Olukoju, the Commissioner for Communications in Kwara State, issued a statement on Sunday condemning the targeting of religious institutions and commending the swift response of security forces, forest guards, and local vigilantes. "The government condemned the cowardly targeting of religious places under any guise," the statement read, emphasizing the collaborative efforts to address the security threat.
The statement further urged all stakeholders, including community members, to continue working together to combat the menace of banditry. "While commending the immediate response of the security forces and other stakeholders, we task them to ensure that the ongoing manhunt leads to the rescue of the remaining victims and arrest of the perpetrators," it added, underscoring the government's commitment to protecting lives and property.

Authorities reported appreciable progress in combing forested areas to curtail criminal activities, with security forces and vigilantes intensifying patrols and surveillance.
