The Speaker of the local government council, Hon. Sabo Yusuf Usman, confirmed the abduction to the BBC, stating that it took place around 1:00 a.m. on Friday, March 20, 2026. According to Usman, the attackers employed a cunning ruse to gain access to the secretary's home.
"The incident happened around 1:00 a.m. while the secretary was asleep in his house," Usman explained. "The gunmen first woke the secretary's son, who was sleeping in the outer compound, and forced him to knock on his father's door under the pretence of a stomach ache."
He further detailed the sequence of events: "After he knocked, his father asked who it was, and he replied that it was his son. When asked what the problem was, he said he had a stomach ache. The father then opened the door, and the gunmen immediately seized him along with the son."

Usman added that the assailants later released the son but fled with the secretary before security operatives could arrive at the scene. The swift escape of the kidnappers has raised concerns about response times and the effectiveness of local security measures in Kibiya.
