Kano LG Secretary Abducted by Gunmen in Nighttime Home Invasion

In a brazen late-night assault, gunmen have abducted the Secretary of Kibiya Local Government Area in Kano State, Hon. Hamza Musa Durba. The incident occurred at his residence in Dinya town, marking a disturbing escalation of insecurity in the region.

Details of the Attack

The Speaker of the local government council, Hon. Sabo Yusuf Usman, confirmed the abduction to the BBC, stating that it took place around 1:00 a.m. on Friday, March 20, 2026. According to Usman, the attackers employed a cunning ruse to gain access to the secretary's home.

"The incident happened around 1:00 a.m. while the secretary was asleep in his house," Usman explained. "The gunmen first woke the secretary's son, who was sleeping in the outer compound, and forced him to knock on his father's door under the pretence of a stomach ache."

He further detailed the sequence of events: "After he knocked, his father asked who it was, and he replied that it was his son. When asked what the problem was, he said he had a stomach ache. The father then opened the door, and the gunmen immediately seized him along with the son."

Aftermath and Security Response

Usman added that the assailants later released the son but fled with the secretary before security operatives could arrive at the scene. The swift escape of the kidnappers has raised concerns about response times and the effectiveness of local security measures in Kibiya.

This abduction is particularly alarming as Kibiya Local Government has largely been considered a peaceful area. However, neighbouring regions such as Tsanyawa and Shanono, which share borders with Katsina State, have experienced repeated bandit attacks in recent months. The incident suggests a potential spillover of violence into previously secure zones.

Broader Implications

The kidnapping of a local government official highlights the growing audacity of criminal elements in northern Nigeria. It underscores the urgent need for enhanced security protocols and community vigilance, especially in rural and semi-urban areas where such attacks are becoming increasingly common.

Authorities are currently investigating the abduction, with efforts focused on locating Hon. Durba and apprehending the perpetrators. The community remains on edge, calling for immediate action to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of residents and public officials alike.
