Man arrested for kidnapping 4-year-old in Edo

Operatives of the Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) have apprehended a young man suspected of kidnapping a four-year-old boy in Benin City. The swift arrest followed the alertness of members of the public, leading to the child's safe recovery.

Vigilant Citizens Foil Abduction Attempt

The incident, which sent shockwaves through the Ikpoba Hill area, unfolded on January 4, 2026. According to the Deputy Corps Commander of Operations for the ESSC, Richard Balogun, a woman had gone out with her young son when the boy suddenly vanished from her sight within minutes.

The suspect, identified as 21-year-old ThankGod Destiny, allegedly seized the child and hurriedly boarded a commercial bus heading towards Kings Square in central Benin. It was inside this bus that his plan began to unravel.

Driver and Passenger Raise Alarm

The commercial bus driver became suspicious due to the clear lack of resemblance between the man and the little boy. When questioned, Destiny first claimed the child was ill and he was taking him to a hospital. However, his story changed when a female passenger also inquired about their destination.

"He replied that he was going to buy the boy shoes," stated Balogun. The conflicting explanations raised immediate red flags for both the driver and the passenger. They promptly raised an alarm, which attracted ESSC operatives who were on patrol in the vicinity.

Swift Arrest and Happy Reunion

The security personnel moved quickly, arresting ThankGod Destiny on the spot. Most importantly, the four-year-old victim was rescued unharmed. The ESSC confirmed that the child has since been reunited with his relieved family.

Following the arrest on Thursday, January 8, 2025, the suspect was handed over to the Edo State Police Command. He is now in their custody for a comprehensive investigation and subsequent prosecution.

This event highlights several critical points for public safety:

  • The crucial role of community vigilance in combating crime.
  • The effectiveness of coordinated efforts between the public and security agencies like the ESSC.
  • The ongoing threat of child abduction and the need for constant parental awareness.

The Edo State Security Corps has commended the driver and passenger for their courage and prompt action, which undoubtedly saved the child from a potentially tragic fate.
