NYSC Exposes Fake Safety Pamphlet Circulating Online
The National Youth Service Corps has officially denied authorship of a safety pamphlet circulating online that allegedly advises corps members to pay ransom if kidnapped or taken hostage.
In a strong statement released through its official X account on Thursday, November 20, 2025, the NYSC management labeled the document as completely fake and unauthorized.
Management's Official Response
The NYSC clarified that while a consultant had presented a similar document for consideration in 2021, the scheme never adopted it as official policy. The management emphasized that the circulating pamphlet does not represent the organization's stance on security matters affecting staff and corps members.
"Management wishes to make it clear that the document being circulated is not an official NYSC publication and does not represent the Scheme's policy regarding staff and corps members' security," the statement read.
The organization urged the public to completely ignore the fake pamphlet and reassured stakeholders of its commitment to welfare and security.
Content of the Controversial Pamphlet
The disputed document contained several controversial safety tips that sparked public concern when it resurfaced online recently. Some of the advice included in the pamphlet were:
- Do not resist armed kidnappers
- Keep calm and be patient
- Do not antagonize your captors, be polite and operate with reasonable regards
- Establish a personal relationship with your captors as early as possible
- Advise your friends involved in negotiation to be friendly with your captors
This is not the first time the document has caused controversy, as it initially gained public attention back in September 2021. The recent resurgence prompted the NYSC to issue the current clarification to prevent misinformation.
NYSC's Ongoing Security Commitment
In their statement, the NYSC management reaffirmed their dedication to the safety and security of all corps members and staff. They highlighted their continuous collaboration with security agencies and other stakeholders to ensure adequate protection measures are in place.
"The NYSC Management remains committed to the welfare, security, and safety of its staff and corps members and will continue to collaborate with security agencies and other stakeholders in this regard," the organization stated.
The management concluded with their official motto: "Nigeria is Ours; Nigeria we serve," emphasizing their commitment to national service and unity.
