On July 22, 2026, the Zamfara State Police Command successfully rescued two kidnapped mothers and their three children from armed bandits operating along the Gummi–Sokoto Road. The operation, carried out by the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), also led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and a Boxer motorcycle in a separate engagement.
Rescue Operation Details
According to DSP Yazid Abubakar, the command's spokesperson, a large group of armed bandits blocked the Gummi–Sokoto Road at approximately 10:30 hours and intercepted a Golf vehicle with registration number BE 654 ANC (Kaduna). The bandits abducted the occupants with the intention of taking them to an unknown destination. Upon receiving a distress report, operatives from the VCRU swiftly mobilized to the scene. On sighting the approaching police team, the bandits opened fire, but the officers responded with superior firepower. Unable to withstand the sustained exchange, the bandits fled into the surrounding bush, abandoning the victims. Hauwa'u Saidu, Hauwa'u Umaru, and their three children were rescued unhurt. They were taken to a medical facility for examination and later reunited with their families.
Separate Operation and Recovery
In a separate operation on the same day at about 10:00 hours, a police patrol team on routine confidence-building patrol along the Kaura Namoda–Gusau Road encountered a group of suspected armed bandits. The operatives engaged the criminals in a gun duel, forcing them to flee into the bush with suspected gunshot injuries. A thorough search of the area led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle and one Boxer motorcycle. Efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects, recover additional weapons, and bring all those involved to justice.
