The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has introduced a contactless passport renewal system for eligible Nigerians living abroad, eliminating the need to visit an embassy for biometric enrolment. The new process allows applicants to complete most steps online, verify their identity with their National Identification Number (NIN), capture biometrics via a mobile app, and track their application remotely.
How the Contactless Passport Renewal Process Works
The process begins on the official NIS passport portal. Applicants select "Apply from Outside Nigeria" and then "Apply for Renewal or Reissue." They create an account and verify their identity using their NIN and date of birth. After verification, they fill out the renewal application form, choose the Nigerian embassy or high commission that will process the application, upload required documents, and pay the passport renewal fee. Upon successful payment, applicants receive an Application ID and Reference Number, which are essential for tracking the application.
Opting for the Contactless Service
After submitting the application, applicants can choose between a regular physical appointment or the contactless option. Those who qualify select "Opt in for Contactless" under the application status or appointment section of the portal. A guide is then provided, directing them to download the NRS mobile app. Inside the app, they log in or create an account, select "Passport Application Services," choose "Passport Biometric Enrolment," and enter their Application ID and Reference Number. The app checks eligibility for the contactless process. If eligible, applicants capture their facial image and fingerprints directly on their phone and submit the biometrics for review. Once approved, they pay the contactless service fee.
What Happens If You're Not Eligible
Not all applicants will qualify for the contactless option. Those found ineligible can return to the passport portal and schedule a physical appointment at the embassy or high commission they selected during the application. Even after completing the online process, all applicants must print their completed application form and package it with their current Nigerian passport. Both documents are placed in a self-addressed return envelope and mailed to the processing embassy or high commission. Applicants can begin tracking their passport status about two weeks after submission through the tracking portal or the NRS mobile app.
The new contactless system is expected to reduce long queues, unnecessary travel, and the stress many Nigerians in the diaspora have faced when renewing passports. Applicants are advised to use only official Nigerian Immigration Service platforms to avoid fraud.
