Nigerian Army Establishes Two New Bases in Northeast, Reports Major Gains Against Terrorists
Army Sets Up Two New Bases in Northeast, Rescues 366

The Nigerian Army has significantly bolstered its operational footprint in the restive Northeast with the establishment of two new military bases. This strategic move aims to enhance the ongoing fight against terrorism in the region.

New Forward Operating Bases to Intensify Operations

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaibu, announced that two Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) have been set up this year. The new bases are located in the Duji and Kekeno communities.

General Shuaibu, who was represented by the Commander of the Infantry Corps, Major General Godwin Mutkut, made the disclosure on Saturday. The announcement came during a Christmas luncheon for wounded soldiers at the Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The Army Chief stated that these new bases are designed to give more impetus to military operations. They are expected to enhance the effectiveness of troops in key terrorist strongholds, including the Lake Chad region and the vast Sambisa Forest.

Substantial Gains in Counter-Terrorism Campaign

In a related development, the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, provided a detailed update on recent successes. He revealed impressive figures from operations conducted between May and December 2025.

Our gallant troops recovered 254 assorted weapons from terrorist groups. Furthermore, they successfully rescued 366 civilians who were being held captive in various terrorist enclaves across the region.

In a significant blow to terrorist communications, forces intercepted 300 units of Starlink satellite communication devices. These devices are often used by insurgents for coordination.

Perhaps one of the most telling signs of pressure on the terrorist networks is the surrender of their members. General Abubakar confirmed that no fewer than 881 Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists and their family members surrendered to troops in 2025.

These accomplishments underscore the tangible progress being made in the counter-insurgency campaign that has affected Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states for 16 years.

Army Prioritizes Welfare and Infrastructure for Troops

Beyond the front lines, the Nigerian Army leadership is also focusing on improving conditions for its personnel. Lieutenant General Shuaibu has approved key infrastructural projects for the newly established 248 Battalion at Illela Barracks in Sokoto State.

During a visit to the battalion, the COAS assured officers and soldiers that their welfare remains a top priority. He acknowledged the initial challenges of setting up a new unit and outlined steps to address them.

Approved projects include the construction of additional accommodation blocks, development of a standard parade ground, and the building of an access road leading into the barracks. These initiatives are aimed at improving the living and working conditions for the personnel stationed there.

Addressing the troops, General Shuaibu described their posting as a foundational responsibility with long-term significance. He urged them to take pride in being pioneers of the new unit.

The Army Chief also had a special charge for young officers, particularly lieutenants. He emphasized that their role in training and leadership is central to the unit's effectiveness. He stressed the importance of leading by example, as their conduct directly shapes the discipline and performance of the soldiers they command.
