The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Defence, Hon. Babajimi Benson, has praised President Bola Tinubu for approving a comprehensive review of military salaries and the largest structural expansion of the Nigerian Army in recent years. The committee, in a statement signed by Benson and released on Thursday, August 6, described the decisions as historic and timely, reflecting the Federal Government's commitment to strengthening national security and improving the welfare of armed forces personnel.
Salary Review for All Ranks
The approved pay review covers officers and soldiers across all ranks, with Benson highlighting what he called "substantial" gains for junior personnel. He stated that improved remuneration would boost morale, help retain experienced staff, and attract stronger recruits into service. The statement read: "A well-motivated and properly equipped military remains indispensable to achieving sustainable national security and development."
Benson further emphasized that investing in the welfare of military personnel is not merely a matter of sentiment but a strategic necessity, given the range of security threats Nigeria currently faces, including terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping.
Army Expansion from 8 to 12 Divisions
Beyond the salary increase, President Tinubu approved the creation of four new army divisions, bringing the total from eight to twelve. The new formations will be based in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo, and Benin City. The committee stated that this reorganisation would improve command and control, accelerate troop deployment, and strengthen border security.
Benson also noted that the expansion would sharpen intelligence-led operations and increase the military's capacity to address multifaceted security challenges. The reforms include the recruitment of 28,000 new personnel to fill out the expanded force structure.

Benson said the combined effect of better pay, more troops, and a broader operational footprint would deepen professionalism and institutional discipline across the armed forces. He described the reforms as aligning with Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises security and welfare.
