The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has executed a decisive air operation against terrorist elements in Borno State, inflicting significant damage on a key stronghold. In a precision strike on January 8, 2026, NAF aircraft targeted the Abbagajiri area within the notorious Timbuktu Triangle, a known sanctuary for Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) inside the Sambisa Forest.
Intelligence-Driven Precision Strike
According to an official statement released on Saturday by NAF Spokesman, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the mission was launched based on credible, multi-source intelligence confirming active terrorist activities in the location. Air assets were deployed for integrated surveillance before engaging identified targets with precision munitions.
The primary objective was to degrade the terrorists' operational capability, deny them a safe haven, and prepare the environment for subsequent ground operations. Ejodame emphasized that the strikes were conducted "in strict adherence to established rules of engagement and the protection of non-combatants."
Structures Destroyed, Insurgents Neutralized
The aerial bombardment successfully destroyed several terrorist structures and concealed logistics facilities, which are critical for storing weapons, ammunition, and supplies. The attack severely curtailed the insurgents' freedom of movement and action in the area.
A follow-up engagement was conducted against armed elements observed regrouping at the scene, leading to the neutralization of multiple fighters. The effectiveness of the air campaign was later confirmed by ground troops who advanced into the area, validating the success of the joint air-land operation.
Air Chief Reaffirms Commitment to Sustained Pressure
Commenting on the operation, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, stated that the mission reflects the NAF's determination to control the airspace in support of combined military efforts. He highlighted the service's aggressive posture and precision use of airpower.
"This operation demonstrates our unwavering commitment to delivering precise and decisive airpower in support of ground forces," Aneke said. "We will continue to deny terrorists freedom of movement, sanctuary, and logistics wherever they seek to hide."
He further assured that NAF operations will remain relentless, intelligence-driven, and focused on completely dismantling terrorist networks while safeguarding innocent civilians. The air chief noted that such missions are crucial for enabling ground forces to maintain momentum against groups threatening national security.
The Timbuktu Triangle, located in northeastern Borno State around Damboa Local Government Area, is a remote and forested region notorious as a terrorist haven. Its proximity to the borders with Cameroon and Chad makes it a strategic part of the wider Lake Chad Basin conflict zone.
