A devastating road accident on the Girei–Song Highway in Adamawa State has claimed the lives of six individuals, including four members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The crash occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 3, involving a military vehicle and a commercial Hummer bus traveling in opposite directions.
Witnesses reported that the collision caused the bus to overturn and subsequently catch fire. The flames engulfed the vehicle, leading to the deaths of all five passengers aboard the commercial bus. A soldier traveling in the military vehicle also died as a result of the accident.
Police Confirm Identities of Victims
SP Suleiman Ngurore, spokesperson for the Adamawa State Police Command, confirmed the incident and provided preliminary details. He stated that five passengers in the commercial bus were burnt beyond recognition at the scene. Preliminary identification revealed that four of the deceased were NYSC members posted to Adamawa State. Two victims have been identified as Suleiman Juliet and Usman Shuaibu, both from Kaduna State.
Ngurore said, "Tragically, all five passengers aboard the Hummer bus were burnt to death after the vehicle caught fire following the collision." He added that the soldier in the military vehicle also succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.
Investigation Underway
Police officers and emergency responders arrived at the scene promptly. The bodies were evacuated to the Specialist Hospital in Yola for identification and preservation. Authorities are working to identify the remaining victims and contact their families.
SP Ngurore assured the public that a thorough investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash. He said further details will be released as the investigation progresses.
The incident has cast a pall of grief over the community, as families and colleagues mourn the loss of the young corps members and the soldier. The NYSC has not yet issued an official statement, but local officials have expressed condolences.
