The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has commended the Governors of Ogun and Lagos States, Dapo Abiodun and Babajide Sanwo-Olu, as well as the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Disu, for their proactive measures in combating kidnapping and banditry in the region.
Afenifere's Recognition of Security Efforts
In a statement released on Sunday, Afenifere's National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, highlighted the significant strides made by these leaders in addressing security challenges. The group noted that the collaborative efforts between the state governments and the police have led to a noticeable reduction in criminal activities, particularly along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway and other vulnerable areas.
According to Ajayi, "Governor Abiodun's administration has been relentless in its pursuit of peace and security, deploying modern technology and community policing strategies to nip crime in the bud. Similarly, Governor Sanwo-Olu and Commissioner Disu have worked tirelessly to ensure that Lagos remains a safe haven for its residents and businesses."
Specific Actions Praised
Afenifere specifically applauded the establishment of a joint security task force by the Ogun State government, which has been effective in curbing the activities of kidnappers and bandits. The group also praised the Lagos State government for its investment in surveillance infrastructure, including the installation of CCTV cameras across the state.
"The recent arrest of several notorious criminals and the rescue of kidnap victims are clear indicators that the security apparatus in these states is working," Ajayi added.
Call for Sustained Efforts
While commending the achievements, Afenifere urged the governments and security agencies to sustain and even intensify their efforts. The group emphasized that the fight against insecurity requires continuous vigilance and adaptation to evolving criminal tactics.
"We cannot afford to rest on our laurels. The criminals are constantly devising new methods, and our security forces must remain one step ahead. We call on the federal government to provide more support to state governments in terms of equipment and intelligence sharing," the statement read.
Impact on Regional Development
Afenifere also linked the improved security situation to economic development, noting that a safe environment attracts investment and boosts tourism. The group expressed optimism that the ongoing efforts would further enhance the socio-economic well-being of the South-West region.
"The reduction in kidnapping and banditry has restored confidence among investors and residents alike. We are hopeful that with continued collaboration, the region will witness even greater progress," Ajayi concluded.
