Fatal Road Accident in Akure Claims Two Brothers

A tragic road accident in Akure, Ondo State, on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, resulted in the deaths of two brothers. The crash occurred near the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) headquarters in the Ijapo area during routine checks. A truck with no registration number collided with a Nissan car (registration Ondo WWW 322 TA) and a motorcycle, killing the brothers instantly. Two other individuals sustained injuries in the incident.

Eyewitness Accounts

Eyewitnesses reported that the brothers were riding the motorcycle when a speeding truck rammed into the Nissan car, the motorcycle, and other vehicles. A commercial driver whose vehicle was severely damaged narrowly escaped death. He recounted: "I parked to deliver goods. Suddenly, I heard shouting and saw the tipper clearing vehicles. I ran for my life. The tipper crushed the two men on the motorcycle instantly."

Police Intervention Prevents Violence

Tensions escalated as angry residents attempted to attack VIO officials, blaming them for the accident. Police officers promptly intervened to restore order. The Ondo Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Samuel Ibitoye, confirmed: "The accident occurred due to brake failure. Four persons were involved; two were killed. The corpses were deposited at Ondo State Hospital Mortuary by the Nigeria Police Force."

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, added: "The tipper truck collided with the motorcycle and the Nissan vehicle from the rear. The motorcycle rider and his passenger were rushed to the Federal University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Akure, where they were confirmed dead. Some angry youths attempted to attack VIO officials, but police acted promptly to prevent a breakdown of law and order."

The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy, while the vehicles involved have been recovered for safekeeping and further inspection.
