The Ondo State Security Network, Amotekun, has officially debunked reports of attacks on schools across the state, stating that there is no record of any breach of peace in educational institutions. In a statement released on Wednesday, the agency's spokesperson, Jimoh Adeniken, described the circulating reports as false and misleading.
Adeniken emphasized that there is no confirmed case of bandit invasion or occupation in any part of Ondo State, contrary to widespread speculation. He urged residents to continue their lawful daily activities and business engagements without fear, while remaining vigilant and reporting any suspicious movements to security agencies.
The rumors of attacks caused panic on Wednesday, with parents and guardians rushing to schools to withdraw their children. Although no actual attacks occurred, women were seen fleeing markets and workplaces to secure their children. Initial reports suggested that St. Louis High School and later Fiwasaye Girls High School in Akure were under attack, but these were quickly proven false.
On Tuesday, a similar rumor spread in Odigbo Local Government Area, claiming that the local council had ordered school closures due to fear of bandit attacks. Council officials later debunked this, stating that no such order was given and that there were no threats to schools in the area.
Residents attributed the panic to the recent abduction of school children and teachers in Oyo State, which has drawn widespread reactions. School authorities attempted to calm parents and assure them of their children's safety, but many still chose to take their wards home.
The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) in Ondo State staged a protest on Tuesday demanding the release of the abducted Oyo victims. A similar protest was carried out by civil society groups in Akure on Wednesday. Both the Ondo State Government and the Police Command have separately debunked the rumors, assuring residents of their safety.
Adeniken confirmed that Amotekun has directed all area commanders, coordinators, and heads of tactical units to maintain 24/7 special patrols across all 18 local government areas, focusing on schools, churches, public facilities, critical national assets, and other strategic locations to prevent and combat criminal activities. He reiterated the corps' commitment to protecting the people and maintaining a safe environment for residents and visitors alike.
