A tragic bus accident in Hungary has left one driver dead and 23 others injured after the vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a tree. The bus was transporting young athletes to a sports competition when the incident occurred.

Details of the Accident

The crash took place in the town of Hird in southwestern Hungary at approximately 5:20 a.m. local time on Saturday, May 30. Baranya County Police stated that the cause of the accident has not yet been determined, and investigations are ongoing.

The bus was carrying 28 people, including 19 youth competitors from the aerobics division of the Pécs Sports School, three coaches, six parents, and the driver. The group was en route to the second round of the Hungarian Cup at the Folyondár Street Hall in Budapest, located about 120 miles north of the crash site.

Injuries and Response

According to police, 23 of the 28 passengers sustained injuries. Paramedics transported all passengers to hospitals for medical care. One young athlete suffered a broken femur, several broken fingers, concussions, bruises, and abrasions. Two coaches were also seriously injured and remain under continuous medical monitoring.

The Pécs Sports School released a statement confirming the injuries and expressing concern for the victims. Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok described the accident as “heartbreaking” in a Facebook post, offering condolences to the family of the deceased and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.

The competition organizers, PSN Zrt., confirmed that the rented bus suddenly veered off the road in the Hird area. The Hungarian Cup second round was scheduled to take place on the same day as the crash.
