Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic train accident that occurred in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, resulting in four deaths and multiple injuries.
Governor's Statement
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ekpen Ahon, the governor conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the swift recovery of those receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the incident.
Oborevwori described the accident as heartbreaking and unfortunate, emphasizing that the loss of lives is a painful tragedy not only for the affected families but for the entire state.
Emergency Response
The governor revealed that the state government promptly mobilized relevant authorities to the scene to provide immediate assistance to victims and ensure an effective emergency response.
He directed the Commissioner for Special Duties, along with the Chairmen of Ika South and Ika North-East Local Government Areas, to proceed to the accident scene and coordinate rescue operations.
Security and Rescue Efforts
Oborevwori commended security agencies for their swift response, noting that the Commissioner of Police personally visited the scene and deployed adequate security personnel to protect passengers' luggage and valuables during rescue operations.
Injured victims were promptly evacuated to nearby hospitals for treatment, while passengers who escaped unhurt were transported to safety within the town. The remains of the four victims were deposited in a mortuary.
Hospital Admissions
The Chairman of Ika North-East Local Council, Monday Odigwe, disclosed that 13 of the 35 victims were admitted at the Central Hospital, Agbor; 12 others were receiving care at the General Hospital, Owa-Oyibu; and the remaining 10 were being treated at the General Hospital, Owa-Alero.
