The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has officially launched a Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) aimed at bolstering crime prevention and enhancing public safety across the region. The command also urged its personnel to remain proactive and professional while carrying out their duties.
Official Launch in Abuja
In a statement issued by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, the launch ceremony took place in Abuja as part of broader efforts to intensify the fight against violent crimes and improve security throughout the Federal Capital Territory. The event was presided over by the Commissioner of Police for the FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi.
Attendees included heads and representatives of sister security agencies, traditional rulers, community stakeholders, senior police officers, and other distinguished guests. Among those present were His Royal Highness, Alhaji Dr Adamu Baba Yunusa, the Ona of Abaji and Chairman of the FCT Council of Chiefs; the Commander of the Guards Brigade, Brigadier General A.O. Onasanya; and representatives from the Naval Base Abuja, 053 NAF Camp, Army Headquarters Garrison, the Nigerian Immigration Service, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and others.
Commitment to Proactive Security
During the launch, CP Sanusi stated that the establishment of the VCRU reflects the commitment of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to proactively address threats posed by armed robbery, kidnapping, violent attacks, organized criminal activities, and other serious crimes that threaten public peace and safety. He noted that the unit has been strategically structured into five operational sectors across the FCT to ensure broader coverage, improved intelligence gathering, faster response capability, and more effective deployment of resources.
The Commissioner emphasized that officers selected for the unit were carefully screened and rigorously trained. He stressed that professionalism, discipline, accountability, and respect for human rights must remain the guiding principles of their operations. He warned that misconduct, abuse of authority, harassment, extortion, and other forms of unprofessional conduct would not be tolerated under any circumstance.
Call for Public Cooperation
The statement further highlighted that CP Sanusi called on residents of the FCT to continue supporting security agencies through timely information sharing. He noted that sustainable security can only be achieved through partnership, collaboration, and collective responsibility.
