A devastating fire has swept through a children's soft play centre and mini zoo in Hertfordshire, tragically claiming the lives of all animals inside the building. The incident occurred at The Jungle Box, located on the Watermill Industrial Estate in Buntingford.
Fire Reported in Early Hours
The blaze was reported at approximately 3 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, prompting a rapid response from emergency services. Ten fire engines were dispatched to the scene to battle the flames.
The Jungle Box, which had opened in June 2025, featured a mini zoo and pets corner housing a variety of small animals. Among the creatures that perished were meerkats, owls, iguanas, giant tortoises, and a 16-foot snake.
No Human Casualties
After extinguishing the fire, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that all animals present in the building at the time of the blaze had died. Fortunately, no human injuries or fatalities were reported.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Darren Cook praised the efforts of the firefighters. He stated: "In the early hours of the morning we received calls to a significant fire at The Jungle Box in Buntingford. Crews worked hard to contain the fire and prevent it spreading to neighbouring units. I'd like to thank all crews for their professionalism and hard work and fire control colleagues for their calm and efficient handling of the calls." He added: "We can confirm that a number of animals were inside the building at the time of the fire and did not survive."
Community Response and Investigation
Thick black smoke was seen billowing from the building, and local residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed. Road closures were implemented on Aspenden Road and London Road to facilitate emergency operations.
A neighbouring business, The Spud Twins, expressed their grief in a heartfelt social media post. It read: "Absolutely devastated for our friends over at the jungle box soft play. If anyone has a visit booked or a party – you will be contacted in due course."
An investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway to determine how the tragedy occurred.
