Gunmen kill two police officers in Rivers checkpoint attack

The Rivers State Police Command has launched a manhunt for gunmen who killed two police officers and injured another during an attack on a security checkpoint in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state. The attack occurred on Monday night, June 29, 2026, at about 9 p.m. along the Mbodo/Aluu axis of Obiri-Kwere Road, where the officers were conducting a routine stop-and-search operation.

Details of the Attack

It was gathered that the three officers, attached to the Aluu Police Division in Ikwerre Local Government Area, came under heavy gunfire from the assailants, who fled the scene immediately after the attack. Residents said the gunmen escaped in a vehicle after shooting the officers. A video circulating on social media on Tuesday showed the bodies of the slain officers lying in pools of blood at the checkpoint.

Residents' Account

Residents alleged that the attackers had earlier robbed people in the area before opening fire on the policemen to avoid resistance. One resident, speaking in the video, said, “Armed robbers came here and robbed everybody. They killed these policemen. Look at their bodies.”

Police Response

The spokesperson for the command, ASP Blessing Kaborlo Agabe, confirmed the killing of the two officers and said an investigation had begun to identify and arrest those responsible. She added that the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, visited the scene on Tuesday morning with members of the command’s management team to carry out an on-the-spot assessment of the attack.
