The Kano State Hisbah Board has announced mandatory medical screening for 3,000 prospective couples ahead of a mass wedding organized by the state government. The exercise aims to ensure the health and wellbeing of all participants before marriage.
Medical Screening Details
Deputy Commander-General of the board, Sheikh Mujahedeen Aminudeen, disclosed in a telephone interview that the screening will involve 1,500 men and 1,500 women. The health tests will include HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, genotype, and drug screening. Participation is compulsory, and any couple failing to undergo the screening will be disqualified from the programme.
Government Support for Couples
The mass wedding initiative is spearheaded by Governor Abba Yusuf's administration. Beneficiaries are primarily widows, divorcees, and spinsters from less-privileged backgrounds. Each bride will receive a set of beds with mattresses and pillows, along with N100,000 cash to start a business after the government pays a N100,000 dowry.

The mass wedding programme was first introduced during the tenure of former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. It was designed to support vulnerable women and address social challenges in the state. The Kano State Hisbah Board, an Islamic religious enforcement agency, promotes moral conduct and social welfare. Following the announcement, some married men have appealed to Governor Yusuf for inclusion in the scheme, seeking to take additional wives without financial burden. The Hisbah Board confirmed that preparations include rigorous registration and compulsory medical screening for diseases like HIV/AIDS and hepatitis.
