The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the death of 23-year-old Nigerian Law School student Faith Ajoke Alayande, who died after allegedly jumping from the rooftop of a four-storey hostel building at the institution's campus in Victoria Island, Lagos. The incident occurred on Friday, August 7, 2026, and was reported to the Victoria Island Police Division at about 6:30 am.
Discovery and Police Report
Another student discovered Alayande's body within the hostel premises and alerted the Chief Matron of the Law School. According to a report shared by security analyst Zagazola Makama, the matron proceeded to the scene, where the deceased was found lying on the ground. She then reported the incident to the police.
The command's spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident to Punch, stating that the matron reported the matter after the deceased was found unresponsive. Adebisi disclosed that another student and a relative reportedly found a suicide note written by Alayande, prompting them to search for her.
Suicide Note and Alleged Jump
Before they could locate her, she had allegedly jumped from the rooftop of the four-storey hostel building. Adebisi said, "I can confirm the incident. The deceased reportedly wrote a suicide note and, before her hostel mate and a relative could locate her, she jumped from the rooftop of a four-storey building." The matron's report prompted police operatives to visit the scene, and her body was evacuated to a morgue for preservation. An investigation is ongoing.
Supervisee's Tribute
Meanwhile, Uchenna Marvin, who shared Alayande's photo, said she was his supervisee during her university years. He recalled that she advocated for people's right to life and to die. Marvin said, "Faith was my supervisee during her years in the University when she wrote her research work. She graduated and went to the Nigerian Law School this year. It is actually heartwrenching to hear that she committed suicide by jumping from a 4 storey building in the Nigerian Law School, Lagos Campus. This is a waste!" He added, "I recall teaching THE RIGHT TO DIE in Medical Law and Faith had me engaged severally. She advocated that people who had the right to life should have the right to also die."
Impact and Ongoing Investigation
The death has sparked discussions about mental health support in educational institutions. The police have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. The Nigerian Law School has not yet issued an official statement.
