Massive Power Outage Hits Lagos, Osun After Transmission Failures

Power Outage in Lagos and Osun States

Residents in parts of Lagos and Osun states are experiencing widespread electricity outages after two major transmission lines failed and flooding damaged infrastructure, according to the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) and the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

Transmission Line Failures Cause Load Shedding in Lagos

EKEDC announced on Sunday that the shutdown of the Oshogbo-Ikeja 330kV transmission line and the Benin-Egbin 330kV transmission line significantly reduced power allocation to the company. This forced load shedding across several business units in Lagos State. The company stated it is working closely with the national grid operator to restore normal electricity supply once the affected lines are repaired, though no timeline was provided.

Flooding Worsens Lagos Power Crisis

This development follows the Transmission Company of Nigeria's declaration of force majeure on the Oworonshoki 132/33kV and Lekki 330/132kV transmission substations due to severe flooding, which has continued to disrupt electricity distribution in many parts of Lagos. Residents in areas including Chevy View Estate, Chevron Drive, Agungi, Alpha Beach, Ikate, Elegushi, Carlton Gate, Kusenla, Victory Park Estate, Oniru, Maroko, Muri Okunola, Ajose Adeogun, Ligali Ayorinde, part of Aboyade Cole, Morinho Drive, Landmark Road, Igbo Efon, Lekki Tollgate 2, Igbokusu, Gbangbala, Platinum Way, Jakande/Coastal Road, OADC/Mayegun, Ajiran, Chevron Alternative Area and Osapa London have been without power for days.

Isi Okwuadi, a resident of Festac, said the community had been without electricity for four consecutive days, making it difficult to pump water and carry out basic household activities. EKEDC attributed the outage to reduced power allocation from the grid and reiterated that normal supply would resume once conditions improve.

Flooding Knocks Out Power in Osun State

In Osun State, IBEDC reported that flooding at the Ilerin Injection Substation, triggered by a heavy windstorm, disrupted power supply to several communities. The incident affected the Isare 11kV, Irogbo 11kV and Mount Carmel 11kV feeders, causing outages in Ifewara, Iwara, Bolorunduro, Irogbo, Ayeso, Odo-Oro, Wesley, Express Area, Ilerin, Irojo, Olomilagbala, Iwikun, Isare and neighbouring areas. IBEDC said its technical team has commenced restoration work and apologised for the inconvenience.
