A mining pit collapse at Kassa community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State has resulted in the deaths of seven miners. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, August 12, 2026, while the victims were actively engaged in mining operations at the site.
Eyewitness Account of the Collapse
Albert Danlami, a resident of the community, reported that the collapse happened at approximately 7pm, when the pit suddenly caved in on the miners. He described the event as devastating. Danlami stated that the victims were trapped underground following the collapse, prompting residents and other miners to immediately begin efforts to recover their bodies.
The sudden collapse caused widespread panic within the community, as residents rushed to the mining site upon learning of the incident.
Official Confirmation and Rescue Efforts
Rwang Tengwong, the Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), also confirmed the incident to Daily Trust. Tengwong verified that seven miners lost their lives in the incident, noting that the victims were at the mining site when the pit collapsed. He said rescue efforts were made after the incident, but the miners were found dead.
The incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by informal miners in the region, where unregulated mining pits pose significant dangers.
