Netizens blame LAWMA after guard dumps trash in drainage

Some Nigerians on social media have blamed the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) for the actions of a 56-year-old school guard who was caught on video dumping refuse into a drainage in Ikorodu. The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed that the security guard has been arrested and will be arraigned in court.

Public outrage and defense of the guard

While many condemned the guard's actions, others argued that LAWMA has failed in its duty to collect trash from residents. Several netizens claimed that LAWMA has not visited their homes to pick up trash in over a month, forcing residents to find alternative means of disposal. One commenter stated, "Blame LAWMA for his action. They haven't picked trash in one month." Another added, "If LAWMA did their job, this wouldn't happen."

Government response

Commissioner Wahab reiterated that the guard would face legal consequences for his actions, emphasizing that environmental laws must be upheld. He urged residents to report any lapses in waste collection to the appropriate authorities rather than resorting to illegal dumping.
