An unidentified woman allegedly stole a newborn baby shortly after delivery at the Comprehensive Health Centre in Gboko, Benue State. The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, August 12, 2026, around 4:00am, according to activist Zege’Orkwande Sughnen Yaaya.
Incident Details and Eyewitness Accounts
Yaaya disclosed the incident in a Facebook post on the same day. According to him, eyewitnesses reported that the suspect was seen following the mother when she arrived at the facility for delivery. Nurses on duty reportedly mistook the suspect for a family member accompanying the patient.
At approximately 4:00am, the suspect allegedly sneaked into the ward and left with the newborn baby. The whereabouts of the woman remain unknown, Yaaya stated.
Security Agencies Notified
Yaaya added that the matter has been reported to security agencies. The activist did not provide further details about the ongoing investigation or any potential leads.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of patients and newborns in healthcare facilities, particularly in the Gboko area. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the theft and take necessary measures to prevent similar occurrences.
