A tragic road accident along the Katsina-Kankia road has resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, with 17 others sustaining injuries. The incident occurred on Saturday night at approximately 8:03 p.m. at Kwanar Gidan Mutum Daya, involving a commercial bus and a trailer.
Details of the crash
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Katsina State Command, confirmed the incident. Deputy Route Commander Shamsudeen Babajo of the FRSC RS1.3 Katsina Sector Command signed the statement. He explained that a Toyota Hummer commercial bus collided with a trailer, affecting 26 persons in total.
Rescue teams from the RS1.35 Kankia Unit Command responded swiftly to a distress call and arrived at the scene within 23 minutes. They commenced rescue operations alongside other emergency responders.
Casualties and injuries
Babajo reported that 17 victims suffered varying degrees of injuries, including fractures, broken legs, and severe cuts. Nine persons died in the crash. Among the deceased, four were reportedly burnt beyond recognition after the commercial vehicle caught fire moments after the collision.
Medical response
All injured victims were evacuated to the General Hospital Kankia for urgent treatment. The remains of the deceased were removed from the scene. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash.
FRSC appeal to motorists
The FRSC expressed sympathy with the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured. The corps also urged motorists to obey traffic regulations, avoid reckless driving, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, especially during the Eid al-Adha period.
