NSIB Probes Warri-Itakpe Derailment, Four Dead

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced an investigation into Monday's train derailment along the Warri–Itakpe corridor, which resulted in the deaths of at least four passengers.

Investigation Underway

A source close to the bureau disclosed to The Guardian on Tuesday that the Director-General of NSIB, Alex Badeh Jnr., has led a team of investigators to the scene of the accident. The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, was also part of the team.

The investigation aims to uncover both the immediate and underlying causes of the derailment and will provide recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Official Statements

The source stated: “The Director-General of NSIB has left for the scene of the accident this morning with other investigators from the bureau. Also, the Managing Director of NRC, Opeifa, was with the DG. As you are aware, the NSIB does not encourage rumours. Our investigation would reveal what happened and how to mitigate it in the future.”

The NRC confirmed the derailment in a statement, noting that emergency response teams and relevant authorities were immediately deployed to the scene to attend to the situation and provide necessary assistance.

The Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) derailed on Monday, leading to the tragic loss of four lives. The NRC assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to manage the incident and support those affected.
