Oyo Police Arrest Masquerade Over Ibadan Killing

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested the Asoleke masquerade in connection with the alleged killing of a 24-year-old man, Sefiu Kehinde, during a masquerade procession in the Labiran area of Ibadan. The incident occurred on Sunday, July 5, 2026, and was reported at the Mapo Divisional Police Headquarters.

Details of the Incident

According to a statement issued on Monday, July 6, by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the deceased was allegedly attacked by the masquerade and some of its followers during the procession. A team of operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer of the Mapo Division immediately mobilized to the scene and rushed the victim to a hospital for treatment. However, he was confirmed dead on arrival by the doctor on duty.

Police Response and Investigation

Olayinka stated that detectives processed and documented the crime scene, while the deceased’s family later obtained permission to bury the body in accordance with Islamic rites. The command confirmed that the Asoleke masquerade has been arrested in connection with the incident, while four of his alleged accomplices remain at large. The police are continuing their investigation to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
