A mass shooting at the Bite of Seattle food festival near the Space Needle on Sunday evening left three people dead and four others wounded, including a 2-year-old boy. Police said one suspect is in custody while another remains at large.
What happened at the Seattle Center?
Gunfire erupted around 6 p.m. local time at Seattle Center, which was hosting the popular Bite of Seattle food festival. According to the Seattle Times and police, two victims died at the scene, and a third person succumbed to injuries at Harborview Medical Center. Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson confirmed that one suspect was taken into custody about three hours after the shooting.
Seattle Assistant Police Chief Tyrone Davis said around 10:50 p.m. that a second suspected shooter remained at large, describing the person as a “young individual.” Davis added, “There may be more. We’re still trying to figure this out.”
Victims and injuries
The four injured victims included a 2-year-old boy, a 23-year-old man, and two women aged 39 and 56, all hospitalized. One of these victims later died, police said. A 40-year-old woman sustained minor injuries and declined transport to the hospital. Witness Michael Girardi told the Seattle Times that the injured toddler appeared conscious but was not crying while being treated by paramedics. “The mother [was] in anguish,” Girardi said.
Chaos and response
Estan Wakonabo, 25, a food festival attendee, described the scene to the Seattle Times: “It was just pure chaos.” He told the Associated Press, “People were hiding, were pushing, people were falling on the ground, baby strollers were falling.” Police believe two suspects were shooting at each other, and the investigation is ongoing.
