The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, has confirmed that seven people were killed and two others injured in a multiple-vehicle crash involving three vehicles at Kara on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the early hours of Monday.
Crash Details and Vehicles Involved
According to a statement signed by the FRSC spokesperson, Superintendent Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, the crash occurred at about 12:03 am and involved a white HOWO CNG/CIMC ENRIC truck, a white MACK trailer, and a Mitsubishi Canter with registration number JJJ920YA.
The FRSC said its Ibafo Outpost Command received the report at about 12:04 am and arrived at the scene five minutes later, at about 12:09 am. The corps classified the incident as a fatal multiple road traffic crash.
Victims and Response
The statement read in part: “Preliminary information indicates that nine persons, all male, were involved in the crash. Sadly, seven persons were killed, while two persons sustained injuries.”
The deceased victims were evacuated from the scene by the Ogun State Ambulance Service, while the injured were taken for medical treatment. The FRSC said the crashed vehicles were handed over to the Motor Traffic Division of the Nigeria Police Force, Ibafo, for further necessary action.
Cause and Safety Advice
The FRSC identified speed violation as the probable cause of the crash, subject to further investigation. The Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists, particularly drivers of articulated vehicles, to avoid excessive speeding and maintain safe following distances.
Ogunjobi also advised motorists to exercise extra caution when driving at night, noting that reduced visibility and fatigue could increase the risk of road crashes. He said, “Motorists, particularly drivers of articulated vehicles, should avoid excessive speed, maintain safe following distances and remain vigilant at all times.”
The sector commander commiserated with the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
