The Adamawa State Police Command has confirmed the deaths of six individuals following a tragic road accident involving a military gun truck and a commercial Hummer bus. The incident occurred along the Narehi axis of the Girei–Song road on Wednesday afternoon.
Details of the Crash
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, the collision took place at approximately 1:50 p.m. The military vehicle was traveling from Gombi to Yola when it collided head-on with the commercial bus, which was carrying five passengers from Yola to Mubi.
Preliminary findings from the police indicate that the impact caused the commercial bus to overturn and subsequently burst into flames. All five passengers aboard the bus were reportedly trapped inside and burned to death.
Victims Identified
The police disclosed that initial identification revealed that four of the victims were serving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) posted to Adamawa State. Two of the deceased corps members have been identified as Suleuman Juliet and Usman Shuaibu, both natives of Kaduna State. Efforts are ongoing to identify the remaining victims.
Additionally, the command confirmed that one military personnel attached to the military vehicle lost his life in the accident, bringing the total number of fatalities to six.
Emergency Response
Police officers and other emergency responders were swiftly deployed to the scene to carry out rescue and recovery operations. The bodies of the deceased have since been evacuated to the Specialist Hospital in Yola, while authorities continue efforts to identify the remaining victims and contact their families.
Condolences and Investigation
Reacting to the tragedy, the Commissioner of Police, Adamawa State Command, Kabir Umar Hassan, extended his condolences to the bereaved families, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the NYSC, and all those affected by the incident. The police said investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing and assured the public that further details would be communicated as they emerge.
