The Oyo State Fire Service successfully rescued a six-month-old baby from a burning building in Ogbomoso North Local Government Area of Oyo State on Saturday night, July 11, 2026. The fire, which originated from a gas leak, engulfed the ground floor of a private one-storey residential building.

Distress Call and Response

Confirming the incident to newsmen, the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Fire Services Reform, Morrof Akinwande, said the agency received a distress call from one Mr Abiodun Mayowa reporting the fire. “At exactly 20:38 hrs on Saturday, July 11, 2026, our office received a distress call through a telephone call from Mr Abiodun Mayowa reporting a house on fire at Olomi Compound in Ogbomoso. Fire personnel, led by PFS II Oluwaleye, were immediately mobilised and promptly arrived at the scene,” Akinwande stated.

Firefighting Operations

Upon arrival, it was discovered that the ground floor of a private one-storey residential building comprising three rooms was engulfed in flames. The firefighting crew swiftly commenced operations and successfully extinguished the blaze, preventing it from spreading to the upper floor of the building and the adjoining property.

Rescue and Safety Measures

A baby of about six months was successfully rescued alive from the burning building. The fire was caused by an unattended gas leak. The Officer-in-Charge conducted a brief fire safety lecture for the occupants and sympathisers, educating them on essential fire prevention measures to prevent future occurrences.

Public Advisory

Akinwande urged members of the public to observe basic fire safety precautions by ensuring the proper installation, regular inspection and maintenance of LPG cylinders and gas appliances. He emphasized that such measures are crucial to prevent similar incidents in the future.
