Troops in Plateau State successfully repelled an attack by suspected Fulani armed bandits on Manja village, Chakfem District, Mangu Local Government Area, but suffered a fatal casualty. Military sources confirmed that Lance Corporal Yusuf Zakari was killed in action during a fierce exchange of fire on July 26, 2026.
Deadly Encounter at Manja Forest
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, troops deployed as a blocking force to prevent attackers from infiltrating Manja community came under heavy gunfire from assailants advancing through Manja Forest. The community has faced repeated security threats due to herder-farmer crises in recent months.
At approximately 1:25 p.m., the troops engaged the advancing bandits. The resulting firefight was prolonged and intense. Despite determined resistance, Lance Corporal Zakari was reportedly ambushed and fatally wounded while shielding his comrades and civilians.
Weapon Seized, Reinforcements Deployed
In a tragic development, the attackers seized the deceased soldier’s personal weapon before retreating from the scene. Reinforcements from Sector 9 have since been deployed to reinforce troops and launch follow-up operations aimed at tracking down the assailants and recovering the stolen weapon.
Preliminary intelligence suggests the attackers are a mix of Fulani militias from Plateau State and armed bandits from neighboring Nasarawa State. This assessment remains subject to verification as investigations continue.
Military Response and Ongoing Operations
Military authorities have activated intelligence networks and intensified search operations to trace the movement of the attackers, who are believed to have retreated into surrounding forests after the encounter.
Zagazola Makama commented: “The death of Lance Corporal Yusuf Zakari illustrates the burden borne daily by Nigerian soldiers deployed to troubled communities. In Plateau and other conflict zones, troops have repeatedly found themselves caught between violent attacks by armed Fulani bandits and hostility from sections of the very communities they are deployed to protect, with incidents of soldiers being assaulted, stoned and, in some cases, killed while trying to restore peace.” He added, “Yet, despite these dangers, they continue to stand on the frontlines, often making the ultimate sacrifice to shield innocent civilians regardless of ethnic or religious identity.”
