A soldier assigned to the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Aulari under the 202 Battalion has died following an accidental grenade explosion in Yobe State. The incident occurred at approximately 6:24 a.m. on May 26, 2026, according to security analyst Zagazola Makama.
The soldier was handling an FN rifle loaded with a 96 Energa grenade when the explosive device detonated unexpectedly. The explosion caused severe injuries to the soldier's face and left wrist, leading to fatal consequences.
Preliminary observations indicate that the weapon was not fired and that the safety catch remained engaged at the time of the incident. Sources reported that the upper portion of the grenade exploded while the rear section remained attached to the rifle's muzzle.
The remains of the deceased soldier were evacuated to the 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital for further action. The military has not released the soldier's name pending notification of next of kin.
