Troops of Sector 8, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), have foiled an attempted armed robbery attack along the Apel-Jipun road in Pushit District of Mangu Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State. The operation, which took place on August 23, 2026, led to the rescue of two local residents who had been accosted by the gunmen.
Swift Response to Gunfire Reports
The incident began when troops received reports of gunshots allegedly fired by suspected armed robbers along the highway. Acting on the information, the troops swiftly mobilised to the area, forcing the gunmen to abandon their operation and flee into the surrounding terrain. The rapid response prevented what could have been a more severe criminal incident.
During the subsequent search of the location, the troops rescued two locals, identified as Samuel Dauda and Luka Daar. The two men were reportedly returning from Maraban on a motorcycle when they encountered the armed men. Their safe rescue underscores the effectiveness of the military's quick reaction to distress calls in the region.
Recovery of Ammunition at the Scene
At the scene, the troops recovered three empty cartridge cases of 7.62mm Special ammunition. The recovery of these materials provides evidence of the armed confrontation and aids in the ongoing investigation. The area was thoroughly searched to ensure no other threats remained.
Following the incident, the troops intensified patrols along the highway and other strategic locations in the area. This increased presence is aimed at deterring criminal elements and preventing further attacks on motorists and residents who use the route daily.
