Troops Neutralise Two ISWAP Terrorists Near UNIMAID

Troops of the 73 Battalion under Operation HADIN KAI, in coordination with local vigilantes, neutralised two suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists during a successful ambush operation along Tamsukawu Road behind the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) in Borno State. The operation took place at approximately 12:15 a.m. on July 16, 2026, when troops lying in ambush made contact with the terrorists moving along the route.

Details of the Ambush

A fierce exchange of gunfire ensued, during which two suspected ISWAP fighters were neutralised, while other members of the group fled into nearby bushes. Following the encounter, troops conducted an exploitation of the surrounding area to track the fleeing terrorists but made no further contact.

Military Operations Against Insurgents

Military sources said the operation forms part of sustained efforts by Operation HADIN KAI to deny terrorists freedom of movement around Maiduguri and its outskirts, particularly along routes frequently used by insurgents for infiltration. Security in the theatre remains under control, although military authorities say troops remain on high alert due to the unpredictable nature of the operational environment.
