The University of Calabar (UniCal) has reaffirmed its ban on wild post-examination celebrations and any other acts that could disrupt peace on campus. The directive was communicated by the institution's Registrar, Chukwuka Icha, in a statement issued on Monday in Calabar.
Concerns Over Unlawful Celebrations
Ms Icha expressed concern that some students, particularly final-year students, engage in unlawful celebrations after their final examinations. She noted that such celebrations often involve reckless driving, flying of colours, and other forms of disorderly conduct. These activities pose risks to both students and the broader university community.
Strict Enforcement of Regulations
The registrar advised all students to desist from such acts and comply with the university's regulations. “The ban on wild celebrations within the campus, around the school gates and all cult-related activities remains in force,” she said. “The management will not hesitate to sanction any student or group found violating the directive.”
She added that the acting chief security officer has been directed to ensure strict enforcement of the ban across the campus and its environs. The registrar urged members of the university community to take note of the directive and comply with it.
Previous Incident Highlights Risks
In 2024, a serious crash occurred on the school premises involving final-year students who were celebrating wildly on campus after writing their last paper. This incident underscores the dangers associated with such celebrations and the need for the ban.
The university management remains committed to maintaining a safe and orderly environment for all students and staff. Students are encouraged to celebrate responsibly and avoid any actions that could lead to harm or disciplinary action.
