9 Dead in Gombe Road Crash Caused by Speeding Trailer

A devastating road accident has claimed the lives of nine individuals on the Kaltungo-Cham Road in Gombe State. The fatal crash, which occurred on the morning of Monday, December 22, 2025, involved a speeding trailer and a Sharon bus, leaving a community in mourning.

FRSC Confirms Fatal Collision Details

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the grim details of the incident. The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Gombe State, Samson Kaura, reported the crash in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria. The accident happened in the Kaluwa community, within the Kaltungo Local Government Area, around 8:33 a.m.

Preliminary investigation by the FRSC pointed to two primary causes: excessive speed and brake failure. Commander Kaura explained that the trailer was speeding on a sloping section of the road when the driver lost control. The massive vehicle then slammed into the back of a Sharon bus, causing it to somersault.

Casualty Figures and Emergency Response

The human cost of the crash was severe. Officials stated that a total of eighteen people were involved in the collision. Out of this number, nine persons lost their lives. The aftermath saw five individuals sustaining various degrees of injury, while four others were fortunate to escape without physical harm.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene. All victims were rushed to the General Hospital in Kaltungo. Those injured received urgent medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were placed in the hospital's mortuary.

FRSC Issues Stern Warning to Motorists

In the wake of the tragedy, Sector Commander Samson Kaura reiterated critical safety advice to all road users. He emphasized the dangers of speeding, particularly on roads with challenging topography like slopes. "We have been advising motorists to avoid excessive speed, especially given the nature of the road, which is sloping," Kaura stated.

He urged drivers to always travel at a controllable speed to prevent such catastrophic losses. Furthermore, the FRSC commander stressed the importance of pre-journey vehicle checks. He called on motorists to always inspect their vehicles before embarking on any trip, highlighting that proper maintenance could avert mechanical failures like brake faults.

This call for caution was made even more poignant given the timing during the yuletide season, a period of typically high travel activity across Nigeria. The Gombe tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of speeding and neglected vehicle upkeep on the nation's roads.
